The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
