'It's like they never miss a pass': The Swans' Ethan Galbraith continues battle with Manchester City.

Ethan Galbraith can't help but smile as he remembers the nail-biting final moments of Swansea's epic comeback triumph against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup. The game wrapped up with Galbraith temporarily wearing a fan's glasses following the on-field celebration.

During the final moments of stoppage time, Galbraith cracked the upright with a powerful shot from 25 yards, and his teammate immediately slammed home the deflection before charging toward the crowd to mark the goal, with fans swarming the players.

Extraordinary Turnaround

The result sealed an extraordinary comeback given Swansea had trailed 2-0 midway through the latter period. In the celebrations, there was some unintended consequences. Galbraith explained, "There was a fan shouting out and myself and Keysy [Josh Key] were puzzled: 'What's he on about here?' Then we noticed the glasses. It was a light-hearted moment putting them on. We are on the pitch as athletes but we're humans, too, so to have a laugh with the fans is always good."

Manchester City Challenge

The victory secured a next round game at home against the Premier League champions on Wednesday, a team Galbraith came close against at the equivalent round of the FA Cup with Leyton Orient in February. The athletic midfielder had arguably the best view when the underdogs took the lead in remarkable manner, with the attacker's first-time shot from about 45 yards going in via the bar and the opposition keeper. It seems unfair that it was credited as an own goal.

"You would have wished they would've given it to him for having a go from that distance," stated Galbraith, who started in midfield before switching to right flank after Orient changed shape. That meant competing with the England international, with whom he traded tops, and the winger was among the Manchester squad who complimented the way Orient approached the match.

City's Quality

"Fitness-wise they are outstanding but even the fundamentals and basic skills, they can just do it over and over again," he explains. "It appears that they never miss a pass and they are adept at control and take the sting out of a game. You can feel you're doing well and then abruptly they will just fizz a pass past your midfield without you even spotting it. You have to be switched on every second of the game. It demands a strong mentality and focus just to keep pace."

Welsh Transition

The Welsh side pushed to sign Galbraith in January and beat off competition to secure him in the summer in a significant move. He established himself as a fans' favourite across multiple campaigns at his former club and has quickly done the same in his new home. At Orient he reunited with the coach, who four years ago gave Galbraith his initial sustained opportunity in first-team action on loan at his loan club from Old Trafford. Then came a loan at fourth-tier the Manchester club, before he moved on from Manchester United.

Growth Journey

"I was likely a somewhat inexperienced going into men's football. I think a lot of players would say development squad matches is very different. Sometimes it seems play is circulated without much intensity. You see few physical contests. Once you start playing first-team football you have to adjust fast."

International Recognition

He has shown that development for club and country, performing well for Northern Ireland, who remain in contention for the global tournament next summer via the playoffs and for whom he has started the last several matches, including two matches encounters against a football powerhouse. Ian Baraclough, Galbraith's former international manager, offered the highest praise, saying he was Northern Ireland's "midfield general" given how he controls possession and his ability to spot a killer pass.

Starting Out

It has been a remarkable path for the youngster from the local area in the Belfast suburb, just outside Belfast, who grew up watching his dad, the elder Galbraith, also a central player, play for Ballyclare Comrades.

Red Devils Debut

Galbraith's only game for Manchester United came in Kazakhstan in 2019, a Europa League trip to the host city, where they played on an artificial pitch and the arena covering was closed owing to the weather of -15C. "That proved to be a extended travel and it was freezing," he recalls, grinning. "The days leading up, the academy prospects practiced as a group, so that helped us acclimatise. Just to join the main group and earn some playing time at the end was incredible."

Moving On

How difficult was it to move on from Old Trafford, the club he transferred from aged a teenager? "The decision proved quite easy, because I reached the point where I realized I wasn't going to make it at first-team level. I'm extremely thankful for the years at the club but it got to the point where I thought I had to take a different path, drop down the leagues and play professional soccer. Now I'm steadily climbing the ladder."

Welsh Adaptation

It is mid-afternoon at the club's training ground but Galbraith has a commitment at the early evening: a learner's exam, another step towards getting on the road. Prior to relocating to the local area, the mid-twenties player was a regular in Swansea's so-called fun bus, a minibus driven by club employees, the transport team, which transports players to and from training and matches.

"It's myself the Portuguese player, another squad member, the midfielder – Melker Widell used to be in it but has begun using his own car. It's enjoyable to socialize with the guys but I'm planning to be the subsequent individual out of the minibus and behind the wheel. His teammate likes to pull a few pranks; he's always up to all sorts."

Public Engagement

During his time at Orient, Galbraith would travel alongside followers on London's Central line after starting his journey at Brentwood. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
